Certified Property and Facilty Manager (CPFM) Scheme

Background
The Accredited Managing Agents (AMA) Scheme was launched in 2006 with the purpose of raising the level of professionalism in the property and facility management industry. This AMA Scheme, however, accreditates only managing agent firms that offer property and facility management services. With increasing sophistication and the need to maintain quality and competent service, it is necessary that individual personnel employed by the managing agent firms and others are trained and qualified to provide such services at a professional level.

It is proposed to introduce a certification scheme to recognize the level of competency and professional experience of individual personnel working in the industry. This individual certification scheme is to provide a framework for ensuring that only competent and qualified personnel are certified to provide property and facility management service to the consumers and clients. Another important reason is to ensure that all practising managers are familiar with the need for sustainable buildings and developments. This individual certification scheme shall be known as the “Certified Property and Facility Manager” (CPFM).

Categories of Certification
In order to recognise the different levels of professional competence and services offered in the field of property and facility agreement, two categories of certification will be introduced. They are as follows:

Certified Property and Facility Manager
CPFM Cat 1
CPFM Cat 2

Criteria for Certification
CPFM Cat 1 – Those who possess recognised degree in property and facility management and with at least 5 years of relevant experience or those with a recognised diploma in property and facility management with at least 10 years of relevant experience.

CPFM Cat 2 – Those who possess recognised degree in property and facility management and with at least 1 year of relevant experience or those with a recognised diploma in property and facility management with at least 3 years of relevant experience. Those without a recognised diploma or degree in property and facility management but with at least 10 years of relevant experience may also apply.

Admission Qualifying Test
In addition to the minimum eligibility for certification, all applicants are required to satisfy the following criteria before admission to the appropriate categories of certification:

CPFM Cat 1 – Applicants are required to attend a refresher seminar or workshop on topics relating to property and facility management. Applicants with vast experience and knowledge in property and facility management may be exempted from attending such a seminar or workshop.

CPFM Cat 2 – Applicants are required to attend a course in property and facility management and a course in BMSMA. They will need to pass a test at the end of these two courses. Click here to view course content. More details of the course will be made known at a later date.
